Mary J. Blige to appear on TV’s “One Life To Live”

Mary_j
Mary J. Blige will be appearing on the ABC soap opera "One Life To Live" on Friday Feb 15 and Monday Feb 18th. She will perform two of her songs from her Grammy nominated album "Growing Pains." This will be her second appearance on the soap opera. “It’s absolutely amazing to be integrated into a
soap opera I’ve watched since I was a little girl,” said
Ms. Blige. “I performed on the show two years ago and had a
ball, and I am beyond thrilled to be welcomed back
again."

MJB appeared as herself in a July 2006 episode and the following week her album sales went up 40%. No doubt she is hoping for the same results this year. This time she will play herself again as a surprise guest for the character Starr Manning’s Sweet 16 party. Spoiled brat. All I got was a New Era hat for my 16th b-day. Anyways, "One Life To Live" sure has a love for urban music…Timbaland also performed on the show last September. I’d love for Lil Wayne to make an appearance. Maybe watch him throw his jacket at an actor.

What happened to Mary J. Blige’s Nina Simone movie?

Mary_j_bligeNinas
A couple of years back, fresh off the success of Eminem’s 8 Mile, Interscope Records head Jimmy Iovine signed a multi-picture development deal with Paramount which included another Eminem project called Have Gun-Will Travel and a Nina Simone biopic with the queen of R&B Mary J. Blige attached as the lead.

Fast forward a couple of years later and still no Nina Simone movie. Mary J. has been busy in the meantime with her guest appearance on HBO’s "Entourage" and her multiple Chevy commercials with T.I. But latlely, word around Hollywood is that due to the recent Notorious B.I.G. project in development, Paramount wants to move forward with this project under its MTV FIlms banner.

The untitled project will be a biopic of 60′s soul singer Nina Simone’s ascent to stardom and her relationship with Paris-based manager Clifton Henderson. Material will also include her rise to fame in the 60′s and how her songs became anthems for the Civil Rights Movement.

Let’s hope that although it will be under MTV Films that they do not give this a light-hearted treatment to attract a younger demographic. Mary J. will attract an older 25+ demo but this is a story that needs to be told the right way. One bright indication that this will be a serious film is that the writer is Cynthia Mort who wrote the recent Jody Foster film The Brave One.
