By The Numbers: Hannah Montana beats out Jessica Alba

Turns out maybe Jessica Alba as a blind violinist is not that appealing to people…especially dudes. Perhaps if she was a naked blind violinist her movie The Eye would have done better than the $13 million it did this past weekend. $13 million is decent but what was surprising was the performance of the Hannah Montana: Best of Both Worlds in 3-D which grossed an astounding $29 million in only 683 venues and was the best ever opening during a Super Bowl weekend. As expected Rambo and Meet The Spartans dropped over 60% and How She Move dropped 63% proving that perhaps people are actually tired of hip-hop dance movies with the same exact plot.
By The Numbers: “Meet the Spartans” #1 at Box Office

Method Man is having a good week in the film biz. Not only did his Sundance movie The Wackness just get sold to Sony Classics, but Meet the Spartans, where Meth plays the Persian Emissary in the 300 spoof, shocked industry insiders by beating out Rambo, Cloverfield and 27 Dresses as the top grossing film this past weekend.
Meet the Spartans ($18.7 million this weekend) barely edged out Rambo ($18.1 million) for the #1 spot. Cloverfield dropped an astounding 68% in comparison to last week proving that all the J.J. Abrams lovers went to see the movie the first week and failed to expand upon that. The step/hip-hop dance film How She Move which featured guest appearances by Mya and Keyshia Cole performed to expectations with $4.1 million in limited theaters. How She Move wasn’t a failure nor was it success but it should have some legs to it on DVD like most hip-hop dance films do. Critics actually felt it was a good movie which is a rarity for dance films as well.
Expect Meet the Spartans to have a heavy drop off next week but it should still make about $40-$45 million total with Rambo coming in at about the same level. Maybe Method Man will become the new lucky charm for box office success. Even his TV role in an episode of "Law & Order: SVU" was one of the highest rated episodes for the franchise program.
